Supporting Shenanigans in Sheboygan
You may have heard the story on Mark Belling's program (WISN-AM 1130) but another mayor, this time in Sheboygan, tried to use the police and the power of city government to harass opponents. This time it was a blogger at Sheboygan Shenanigans who had the temerity to have a link to the Sheboygan Police Department. The city attorney, who has since disappeared, sent her a letter asking her to pull down the link even though there was nothing wrong with having the link. This was followed by an investigation by the police into who possibly could have given her permission to post the link (although none was necessary). Sheboygan's mayor, Juan Perez, has been behind this petty harassment.
Patrick at Badger Blogger has been following the story and has the latest updates. In the meantime, local bloggers have been adding the link to the Sheboygan Police Department to their sites to show their support for Sheboygan Shenanigans.
Waukesha County readers might remember the Pewaukee mayor, Jeff "Little Nixon" Nowak, who was recalled for using the police to investigate his opponents. In Muskego, Charles Damaske was driven from office for his heavy-handed tactics. And in the city of Waukesha, Carol Lombardi finished her reputation as she left office when she called the police on someone daring to collect signatures on a petition. Sometimes it's just too easy for small personalities in local government to make that phone call or two to lean on their critics and rivals. It's up to the other local government officials to resist, and when they fail, it's up to the public to show that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated.
