Jefferson recall successful

Way out in the hinterland in the City of Jefferson, WI, Alderman David Olsen was successfully recalled and replaced by Chris Havill. The race was largely over the proposed building of a Wal-Mart in Jefferson, a proposal which was defeated when Olsen cast the deciding vote. The final vote was 880 to 815, according to the Journal Sentinel.

Proponents point to a number of reasons aside from the Wal-Mart issue as the basis for recall, including mishandling of economic development groups in Jefferson. Opponents of the recall claimed it was "David vs. Goliath" and Wal-Mart's revenge (like Montezuma's revenge, only at a discount).

Interestingly, Olsen's supporters appealed to the Democrats to help and they couldn't save him. We'll see if this the start of a trend at the local level.
