President Dick Gephardt. Go ahead. What mighta been, what coulda been... Somewhere Dick Gephardt is sipping a scotch and branch water and thinking, it should have been me. Don't think so?
Take a look at the electoral map as it stands the night before the election. Now add Missouri to the Democrat total. Pick any running mate excluding John Edwards, of whom Kerry said he couldn't carry his home state. Heck, pick Kerry as the running mate. Or Hillary Clinton. Or one of the California senators. Or, go for gold and pick Governor Bill Richardson. Suddenly Bush is in real trouble.
I bring this up to point out two things:
1) The Democrat party better figure out where they stand on the war on terror, or they're going to lose in two and four years from now. Hint, following Michael Moore off the cliff isn't going to win you any friends.
2) The President is far more vulnerable than he should have been. Perhaps we're in a period of electoral transition, but something needs to be done if the GOP wants to win in four years. Trying to out-liberal the liberals on education and health care ain't going to do it. They will just outbid you everytime.
