I think Michels was the best US Senate candidate. He's self-financing and relatively articulate. In any other year, Feingold would be in real trouble. However, the Bush campaign has sucked up most of the energy (and money), and the major Republicans are apparently sitting it out waiting to take a shot at Doyle. Some irony that the Democrat Governor looking so weak may help save a weak Democrat US Senator.
Memo to Michels: Don't count on seeing that RNC help anytime soon.
