Three college students have been cited and lectured after they floated down the Chippewa River on a slab of ice.
The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students are ages 21, 19, and 18.
Fire battalion Chief Duane Grunst says the slab was about 6 feet by 15 feet. He says the three floated away early Friday morning until a campus police officer spotted them.
Fire officials retrieved the students, who were unhurt.
Grunst says the three were lectured "on how incredibly stupid this joy ride was" and that nearly 20 emergency personnel responded.
Police cited the three for disorderly conduct, which carries a $199 fine.
Unfortunately the article doesn't say whether they really needed rescuing but it strikes me as silly to criminalize stupid fun.
