At the Wisconsin Newspaper Association’s annual Better Newspaper Contest held Thursday and Friday in Lake Delton, The Freeman received five awards for work in 2006 and 2007. The WNA gave The Freeman a first-place prize for general excellence, the highest honor for newspapers in each circulation category.
Individual first-place awards went to layout editor Tina Chronister for overall page design and sports reporter Tony Mooren for his story on the Brookfield Central High School football team’s losing effort at the state championships in 2007, entitled "Heartbreak." A second-place award was given to The Freeman for its business page coverage of the opening of the new Marcus Theater and photographer Bryon Houlgrave was lauded with an honorable mention award for his photographs of legendary guitarist Les Paul’s return to his hometown of Waukesha.
