“Green's proposal would exempt from sales taxes school supplies priced under $50, clothing and shoes under $100, and computers under $1,500 purchased during the first weekend of August. Examples of items that would be tax exempt include: notebooks, text books, folders, paper, writing instruments, book bags, art supplies, laptop computers, desktop computers, printers and keyboards.”
Chris Lufter, candidate for assembly in the 97th district (Waukesha) and former President of the Waukesha Taxpayers League, quickly jumped on the bandwagon supporting the idea.
“As a working mom, I know how hard it is for the average taxpayer every autumn to get their kids supplied for school. Wisconsin doesn’t make it any easier by slapping a sales tax on top.As a father of two small children, I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking this is a great idea.
“Wisconsin was ranked sixth highest in taxes, according to a recent study. Working moms and dads struggle every day just to meet their heavy Wisconsin tax burden. By allowing a break in the sales tax, more parents will be able to make sure their children have what they need to get a good start in school.”
