Scott Newcomer declares victory, finds coupon for moving company

In the 33rd Assembly District special election, the Republicans and Scott Newcomer may have declared victory a little prematurely, but only by a few hours. Earlier this month the Waukesha County GOP sent out their newsletter with a message from the Newcomer campaign. According to the Waukesha Freeman, in the newsletter Newcomer writes, "...as an elected official, people have placed a lot of faith and trust in me that I will make the right decisions for them in Madison."

The Democrats are crying foul, with Democrat candidate Patrick Byrne saying, "It just shows a further lack of respect by Newcomer to everyone who lives in the 33rd district."

Actually, one could argue it's the most respect Newcomer has shown so far for his prospective new neighbors, given his assumption that a majority of them would prefer his brand of carpetbagging conservativism to the more familiarly contemptible liberalism of his opponent.

Or perhaps Newcomer just has many thousands of reasons to be confident heading into today’s election.

As expected, Waukesha District Attorney Paul Bucher selected a special prosecutor thanks to the Democrats inept handling of the issue of Newcomer’s residence. And as expected, the special prosecutor, Mark Blum, quickly dismissed the matter. Bucher piled on the Waukesha Democrats’ bad day when, according to the Waukesha Freeman, he said, “residents of this county should be outraged, not to mention insulted, by this transparent attempt to besmirch the good name of Mr. Newcomer.”

“Besmirch”? Please tell me it was a written statement.

I think what Bucher meant to say was (and pardon my language), “Kiss my ass you Democrat wack-jobs.”

He would’ve been justified, as the Democrats really have been over the top. They accused Bucher of a conflict of interest even before they filed the complaint in an effort to taint Bucher’s name. When he took the “out” they gave him they complained he took too long. When Waukesha Democrat Party Chair Rick Congdon got the bad news that his complaint had as much substance as Newcomer’s Delafield upstairs bedroom, he whined Bucher “…was talking like a Republican hack and was prejudging everything before investigating it.” Well, duh. Since Bucher wasn’t investigating it (thanks to Congdon) he was free to say what he wanted. Well, almost everything he wanted to say. What did Congdon expect? "Gee, it's too bad I wasn't allowed to investigate it because I would've had Newcomer deported to Australia in irons"?

Congdon could’ve tried taking the matter to the state elections board (which is where this belongs) and could’ve used the nice long investigation by the board to embarrass Newcomer. Instead, he rolled the dice for it all and lost.

Apparently the difference between Bucher and Congdon: Bucher knows how to win; Congdon just knows how to whine. When the Waukesha Democrats meet again in whatever phone booth or tree house they can find, maybe they can find someone else to play leader.

Was it just me, or did everyone take a second look to see if County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus had filled in the arrow on the sample ballot run in the newspapers?
