What manner of character resides within?

Tomorrow is election day in Waukesha County. I have it on good authority that less than 10% of the voters are expected to turn out in this special election to replace Dan Finley as County Executive.

We are given, as it works out, two candidates, County Board Chairman Jim Dwyer and State Representative Dan Vrakas, both with long public records and a history of serving the county. One of the candidates, Dwyer, has run a radio ad campaign in these closing days possibly more revealing than his campaign intended.

Jim Dwyer’s ad quotes former County Executive Dan Finley, "the county board chairman is in the best position to be the county executive”, clearly implying an endorsement by Finley for Dwyer. What the ad does not say is that Finley was referring to himself when he was County Board Chairman in the first election for Waukesha County Executive. The ad also does not say that while Dan Finley may be prevented from being involved in the county executive race, his wife Jennifer is Vrakas’ campaign chairman.

Running this radio ad either means Jim Dwyer is a congenital liar or he is a spineless simpleton under the control of his political handlers. Refusing to pull the ad after he was called on the lie either means he’s a brazen congenital liar, or too cowardly to admit he made a mistake in listening to his political handlers and pull the ad.

Either way, this is not the character of someone we need to lead Waukesha County. This is not the character of someone that should serve in public office. Dwyer owes the Finleys an apology, and after voters reject this low, baseless character, Dwyer should consider a job outside the public trust.
