A Watertown man who videotaped himself confessing to suffocating his infant daughter is scheduled for sentencing in Fond du Lac County Circuit Court today. In agreement with prosecutors, 33-year-old Christopher Deming has pleaded guilty to neglect resulting in death. Deming is accused of suffocating four-month-old Nadia in August 2002 when the family lived in Fond du Lac. A criminal complaint says Deming's wife called police and told them her husband had violently shaken their newborn. Investigators were looking into that report when Deming's wife turned over a videotape she discovered containing the confession. Authorities say that at the time the child died, there was evidence of multiple trauma, but investigators could never determine who was to blame. We have a confession on tape, and the prosecutors strike a plea to a charge more appropriate to someone who didn't bother putting his kid's seatbelt on. He suffocated a four-month-old child.
It isn't that the laws aren't tough enough. Sometimes it's the judges, and sometimes (often in Milwaukee) it's the prosecutors. Meanwhile, justice goes unserved.
