But voters such as Terry McQuade, who played basketball for McGuire, said he wrote in Warriors anyway, as a way to protest an election that doesn't include all the major candidates.Former basketball coach and athletic direct Hank Raymonds is also quoted as saying he will not vote because he's a Warrior.
"It'd be like telling Al he could be any nationality he wanted but Irish," McQuade said.
A real newspaper would be doing everything it can to find out the current tallys and would even find someone at Advantage Research to leak the final tally for Warriors as a write-in. Can you imagine what would be happening in the newsroom at The Washington Post if the Redskins decided to change their name? Forget Woodward and Bernstein. There would be a whole newspaper staff armed with blackmail photos of everyone connected to the nickname decision to find a Deep Throat to betray Redskin owner Dan Snyder.
What we need is a Deep Indian. Anyone connected to the voting process who wants to unload the emotional burden of knowing the Warrior tally but can't tell anyone, feel free to send me an e-mail. Think of it as confession without the penance. And the confidentiality. However, I promise to tell only 400 or 500 people and every radio station in town, and my source's identity will go with me to my grave. Unless my source wants to write a book. And if you're telling me everything for purely personal reasons, hey, I can still make you look like an anonymous hero.
Professor John McAdams points out that Marquette officials may release the final total number of write-ins for Warriors if the administration likes the numbers. He also explains why someone would find it advantageous to write-in Warriors even if they have a favorite on the list.
Mark Belling of WISN Radio is still running his own poll at www.Belling.com and it includes Warriors. Go vote. His poll ends the same time the university's poll ends.
