The Camp David Accords are still gushed over in praise of the worst president of the 20th century, President Carter. Now we're on the verge of peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians, the result of US Steadfastness and a consistent policy. The peace is tenuous, but peace it is. Will President Bush get the credit? Or will it be ignored as peace between India and Pakistan has been ignored?
We were told that before anything could be accomplished in the Middle East, the Palestinian question had to be settled. Of course, that nonsense is only recent conventional wisdom without basis in reality. Much has been accomplished elsewhere while the conditions for a lasting peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians were slowly reached. Now that the Palestinian question is on the verge of a solution, a two state solution, can we get about dealing with some of the nastier regimes in the area that directly affect the interests of the United States?
