The great showdown never happened. Fahrenheit 9/11 was shut out. The Passion was nominated in just a few small categories. Martin Scorsese looks unstoppable.
Once again, I didn't see any of the movies nominated. Okay, it's probably because I didn't see any movies at the theater. I'll probably see Phantom of the Opera and joke about halfway through, "Hey, where's Lon Chaney and when did they add sound?"
It's not that Hollywood isn't making good movies lately. But when the come out on DVD I can just as easily rent or purchase them and ask aloud, "How did Chicago beat The Pianist? How did Shakespeare in Love beat Saving Private Ryan? And will someone please, please tell me how Titanic beat L.A. Confidential?"
What about the big blockbusters, you ask? With CGI dominated movies, they actually look better in your house than on the big screen. So stay at home, ignore the Oscars, and rent/buy a really good movie instead.
