Maybe I'm just soft on crime, or maybe we have too many cops

From today's crime report in the Waukesha Freeman:
13. Two Waukesha boys, 14 and 16, were cited after fighting at Waukesha North High School, 2222 Michigan Ave., at about 2 p.m. Tuesday.
14. A 16-year-old boy was cited for disorderly conduct after he swore at and gave an obscene gesture to a teacher at Waukesha North High School at about 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Maybe I'm just a city slicker who grew up in a bad neighborhood and attended the Milwaukee Public Schools. But c'mon. Was it really necessary to involve the police because some hormonal high school student swore at a teacher and used an obscene gesture? Was it really necessary for two teenage boys to be given tickets for fighting?

Isn't this what the principal's office is for? I remember getting into fights at school at that age. Often the teacher would just break it up and send the kids to their classes. Sometimes the fight would get referred to the vice principal.

As for the obscene gesture and swearing, surely a conference with the parents is more called for than a disorderly conduct ticket.

Given this level of hyperreaction, perhaps we shouldn't be shocked when the parent of the Pewaukee kid who got pushed by a New Berlin football coach as part of an altercation during the game called the cops instead of complaining directly to the school instead. After all, there's a good chance the school would call the cops if the situation was reversed.
