Oconomowoc Mayor leaks the "good news"

Water Blogged in Waukesha caught the Waukesha Freeman story on the latest at Pabst Farms:

OCONOMOWOC - Mayor Maury Sullivan announced Thursday the names of four potential Pabst Farms Town Centre tenants that he said he heard “through the grapevine.”

At his annual “state of the city” address before Oconomowoc Area Chamber of Commerce members, Sullivan said he has heard Target, Kohl’s, PetSmart and OfficeMax are rumored as potential mall tenants, although Pabst Farms Developments and the town center developer, Developers Diversified Realtors, are keeping the tenants’ identities secret until negotiations are finalized.

There is, of course, nothing unique about these stores that can't been seen off any other exit on the I-system in Wisconsin.  These stores are going to directly compete with the existing businesses in the downtowns and off the freeway exits of every other city in Waukesha County.

Why this project continues to receive special favor, including a new freeway off-ramp costing the taxpayers $20,000,000, is beyond any reasonable examination.  You can blame bureaucratic inertia or just plain stubborness, but Pabst Farms would be better off left a vacant field.
