Nobody getting whacked by the state in New Jersey

Governor Jon Corzine signed into law the end of the death penalty in New Jersey. The state had a de facto prohibition - it has not executed anyone since 1963 despite New Jersey reinstating the death penalty in 1982. Aboloshing the death penalty does not release anyone from prison and does not prevent punishment for capital crimes. But it does mean that the state, and by extension the citizens of New Jersey, will not have blood on their hands.

The best part about New Jersey's action is that it was done through the legislative process rather than through the courts.
