One of the questions the ten Republican presidential candidates could be facing tonight in a "debate" in South Carolina is whether South Carolina should continue to fly the Confederate Battle Flag on the Capitol grounds. The flag was removed from the Capitol dome in 2000 and placed next to a monument honoring fallen Confederate soldiers. Despite this compromise, the NAACP continues to encourage a boycott of the state.

Look for the Republican presidential candidates - except Senator McCain - to refer to the issue as a "local matter." It would be nice to see one of them step up and say they consider flying of the flag to be offensive, and that flying of the flag would be like the Germans flying the National Socialist Swastika over one of their military cemetaries. Furthermore, it would be better if he called for the removal of the Confederate Battle Flag from the flags of the other Southern states that incorporated it into their flags' designs.

Unfortunately, it won't happen.
